The Var accumulates between 2,800 and 3,100 hours of sunshine per year. This geographical data directly conditions the amount of electricity that a photovoltaic installation can produce on a single-family home.

Since the tariff reform that came into effect on June 5, 2026, the economic model of residential solar has shifted: the buyback rate for surplus energy has dropped to 1.1 euro cents per kWh, and the self-consumption bonus has been removed for new connection requests. Understanding these new rules before signing a quote changes the profitability of a project over its entire lifespan.

1. Direct self-consumption: the only profitable strategy since June 2026

Before the reform, selling surplus energy back to the grid provided a significant additional income. This lever has practically disappeared for small installations. With the buyback rate reduced to 1.1 cents per kWh, each kilowatt-hour consumed on-site is now worth much more than each kilowatt-hour injected.

The decision to opt for solar energy in the Var therefore relies on the ability to align production and consumption. Programming the water heater, air conditioning, or charging an electric vehicle during peak sunshine hours increases the self-consumption rate. An appropriate home automation system allows these uses to be automatically aligned with the production curve.

Consuming electricity at the moment it is produced has become the pivot of profitability. The sizing of the installation must match the actual needs of the household rather than aiming for a maximum power intended for resale.

2. Sunshine in the Var: a photovoltaic yield above the national average

The Mediterranean climate of the department combines hot, dry summers with mild winters. The absence of persistent snow ensures almost continuous production throughout the year. Each square meter of solar panel installed in the Var can generate up to 30% more energy than in northern France.

Paris, by comparison, receives about 1,600 hours of sunshine annually, which is almost half of what the Var gets. This difference is directly reflected in the number of years needed to amortize the investment. A photovoltaic project sized for a single-family home reaches its breakeven point more quickly in the southeast than anywhere else in mainland France.

Seasonal variability remains moderate: even in December and January, the Var enjoys regular sunny days. This stability reduces the production gap between summer and winter compared to regions with an oceanic or continental climate.

3. Connection request date: a parameter that affects the guaranteed kWh price

The purchase price applicable to a solar installation depends on the date when the complete connection request is submitted to Enedis. This mechanism means that a one-month delay in assembling the file can shift the rate into a less favorable bracket during the following quarter.

For residential installations up to 9 kWp, the total sale of produced electricity no longer benefits from the support scheme since the reform of March 2025. The reference model is now self-consumption with surplus injection. This change makes the project timeline strategic: obtaining a detailed quote quickly, validating technical feasibility, and submitting the file within the current quarter’s deadlines.

  • Check the power suited to the household’s consumption profile (often between 3 and 9 kWp for a single-family home)
  • Gather the administrative documents before requesting the connection to avoid any rejection of the file
  • Compare the submission date with the quarterly tariff revision schedule

4. Lifespan of solar panels: an investment amortized over more than 25 years

A photovoltaic panel maintains guaranteed production for at least 25 years. Most manufacturers announce an effective lifespan of up to 30 years, with a gradual degradation of performance estimated at less than 1% per year.

Relative to the initial cost, this longevity turns the installation into a long-term financial asset. Once the initial investment is amortized, each kWh produced is net profit. In the Var, where annual production exceeds the national average, the payback period can be well below the warranty duration.

Routine maintenance is limited to cleaning the modules and checking the inverter. The dry climate of the Var reduces risks related to humidity or frost, two factors that accelerate equipment aging in other regions.

5. Property valuation: a concrete asset at resale in the southeast

A house equipped with photovoltaic panels shows better performance on the energy performance diagnosis (DPE). In a tight real estate market like that of the Var, this improvement in energy classification constitutes a measurable selling point.

Buyers in the southeast are familiar with residential solar. They perceive the installation not as a technical curiosity, but as standard equipment that reduces ongoing costs. Solar production integrated into the building becomes a selection criterion just like insulation or heating systems.

  • The DPE takes into account the production of renewable energy on-site, which can lead to a gain of one or two classes
  • Reduced electricity costs reassure buyers about the operating costs of the home
  • The existing installation spares the buyer from administrative procedures and the waiting time for connection

Residential photovoltaics in the Var now hinges on three specific parameters: the household’s self-consumption rate, the date of the connection request submission, and the sizing of the installed power. With the removal of the bonus and the drop in the buyback rate, these technical choices weigh more heavily than sunshine itself in the financial equation of a solar project.
